chuck, i think you got it right!
"Cookie" comes from a Dutch word meaning "little cake".
"Biscuit" comes from the French words "bis" and "cuir", meaning "twice baked".
They were baked and then baked again to take out the moisture so that they would last on board ships on long voyages, but would have been savoury back then (16th century England, Chuck, lots of dragons and castles around then.)
When the French settled in North US they brought their own little "twice bakeds" with them but these were like little dumplings or cobblers, not cookie-looking at all, and eaten in soups or gravy.
Because you already had the word "Biscuit" to mean this, you used the Dutch word to describe the flat baked thing.
So US cookies and UK biscuits mean the same, and the confusion is all the fault of the French.

What about the difference between Crumpets and Muffins?
Muffins from Dunkin' Donuts look different than Thomas' English Muffins which are full of nooks and crannies.
DOn't make me go and buy them all just to photograph them. Don't! Don't! I already had to buy all those biscuits for my ABC Wednesday post! Not muffins ad crumpets too! No! No! I put on 6 pounds last month! Have mercy!!

Thanks for the education helena. Chuck...things are sure different across the pond huh? My friend Louisa lives in London Englad & a few years ago I told her I made biscuts and gravy for my family and she FREAKED out!!! For yes...biscuts are like cookies there...and they dont have creamy milk gravy like we have....thier gravy is greasy blood...so Louisa & I had to explain each of our biscuts and gravies to each other.

It's a sauce made with stock eg. chicen stock or vegetable stock. You heat it till it's reduced or add a little cornflower to thicken it. Good grief! LOL!!!

It's not blood pudding, it's Black Pudding. It's a sausage made from cereals and pigs' blood. Yuuck! I think it's mainly in the north! I would never eat that!! It's served as part of a cooked breakfast, a few slices with egg, bacon, toast etc.
In Ireland they have their own version, White Pudding. I think it's all pretty disgusting!
I ate homemade cricket cookies. Yup, real crickets in them. Crunchy.

I like choklit biccies (cookies!)too! But not dunkt in milk, dunkt in hot tea. YuM! All the choklit melts an yu can lik it off kwik befor it gets on yer ferr. HEHEHEE! Sumtimes I get melted choklit on me nose. HEHEHE!
